What’s essential for a long journey or a long flight? Your first thoughts might be good music, plenty of snacks, clothing, money, or gas.
While all of these things and more are necessary, nothing is as essential as a road map, a GPS, or a flight plan to get you to where you’re going. The same is true for our faith journey.
Scripture calls us to be and to make disciples of Jesus Christ. So, how do we live, grow, and help make disciples of Christ? Great question?
Our current worship series, SOAR: Faith Taking Flight, looks closely at how we take our faith to new heights and how we leverage our wings to aim for new challenges and directions in our journey. Our WINGS are the foundational pillars for a life of faith and growing in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
The WINGS Series
Hopefully, you have received in worship the first two WINGS booklets: Introduction and Worship. These two booklets connect us to the five key pillars of discipleship: Worship, Invite, Nurture, Give, and Serve.
Rev. Dr. Abe Smith is the author of WINGS. He has worked closely with members of our program staff and together they have developed a passion for assisting everyone in earning their WINGS.
The Introduction booklet helps you determine where you are on your faith journey. Each of the following booklets guides you deeper in your understanding of these essential pillars of discipleship.
You’ll receive the other booklets in the coming weeks as guides on the pathway of discipleship. Ideally, you’ll study each book in a small group or Sunday school class.
You can contact, Susan Hale, our Director of Adult Discipleship, to connect with a class. We offer WING studies on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. You can also study the booklets on your own to grow in your faith.
Getting Your Wings
Our intent is to grow as followers of Christ using the pathway as part of your ongoing journey and then help others to grow in their faith as well. WINGS is also a resource we’ll be using for all of our new members. The goal is for everyone to earn your wings and eventually become flight instructors in helping others to earn their wings. We believe this goal is essential in growing the church.
In February, everyone that has completed the WINGS study will receive a WINGS pen to attach to your name badge or lapel, which will help others know who has shared the path and can now guide others.
