Our Prayers for General Conference

Our Prayers for General Conference

A special session of General Conference will commence on Saturday, February 23, 2019, and conclude on Tuesday, February 26. General Conference includes voting delegates from across the globe who will come together to make legislative decisions regarding the official stance of the UMC regarding human sexuality as it especially relates same gender marriage and ordination of self-avowed practicing homosexuals. Regardless of the outcome of General Conference, the UMC church will maintain that all persons are of sacred worth. The primary change will be about marriage and ordination.

The North Texas Conference of the UMC will be represented by five clergy and five lay delegates from our area. Henry Lessner from FUMC Allen is an alternate and will be on hand in case a member of our delegation is unable to fulfill their responsibilities. Rev. Todd Harris is attending as an observer and will be able to report to the congregation the outcome of the conference. Our delegates include Rev. Clayton Oliphint, Rev. Jill Jackson-Sears, Rev. Owen Ross, Dr. Ronald Henderson, Rev. Don Underwood, Tim Crouch, Linda Parks, Richard Hearne, Gretchen Toler-Debus, and Kelly Carpenter.

You can learn about the different plans being considered, how to follow the all that is happening in St. Louis, MO, and how to participate in praying by visiting http://www.umc.org/what-we-believe/general-conference-is-happening.-what-can-i-do.

Let us especially join together to pray for the delegates of the General Conference, the mission and ministry of the UMC, for the mission and ministry of FUMC Allen and especially members of the LGBTQ community and their families and all who feel the weight of decisions being made.

Our Prayer for General Conference

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:20-23

  • We pray for The United Methodist Church, for its lay members, clergy members, fellowship, discipleship and leadership work. We pray that we would ground our feet firmly in hope. We pray also for the future work of the church.
Lord in your mercy, Lord, hear our prayer.
  • We pray for the delegates. The responsibility they carry can feel heavy, and the emotions they are feeling and receiving can take a toll. We pray for their openness to the Holy Spirit, who speaks when our hearts are open and we are hope-filled.
Lord in your mercy,  Lord, hear our prayer.
  • We pray for the delegates from the North Texas Conference, in whom we have entrusted to make wise decisions on our behalf.  We pray for Todd Harris and Henry Lessner as they travel and represent our church at the conference.
Lord in your mercy, Lord, hear our prayer.
  • We pray for the ministries of  The United Methodist Church. We pray for the congregations, conferences and agencies serving people in need around the world.
Lord in your mercy, Lord, hear our prayer.
  • We pray for FUMC Allen, that you will give us wisdom and bind us together in your faithful love during this season and always. Lord, we pray that you make us ONE.
Lord in your mercy, Lord, hear our prayer.
    Amen
