HOLIDAY CHALLENGE UPDATE
by Rev Jessica Wright
On Sunday, November 3, Kids Against Hunger set up 12 lines to assemble packages of highly nutritious vitamin-fortified meals. All of the assembly lines were full for 3 hours with 301 volunteers serving a total of 485 hours! Leaders planned to pack 150 boxes (32,400 meals), but we packed over 260 boxes (57,048 meals)! We’re grateful for our partners from Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, WhyIslam Dallas, Girl Scout Troop 5235, Cub Scout Pack 1220, the Islamic Association of Allen and community leaders like City Council member Lauren Doherty and her family for coming out to pack meals with us! Send Hope will ship this food to the House of Hope in Honduras after the first of next year. We are grateful to everyone who gave their time and energy to help feed children.
At the same time, our Military Support Group offered the opportunity to stuff stockings for our annual Stockings for Soldiers campaign. With the help of 52 volunteers who gave over 85 hours buying items, setting up, and packing, we were able to create 277 stockings which will be sent to men and women who will be deployed over the holidays. The 22 boxes shipped cost just $1,069.15 to mail. Thank you for your generosity in bringing in snacks, tissues, jerky, notepads, lip balm, and many more items as well as funding the postage for this expression of love and support for our service members.
We have also “adopted” out 46 pans that will soon be filled with mashed potatoes and stuffing or dressing to feed children and their families at Boyd Elementary for their Holiday Feast. We’re looking forward to sharing this little bit of holiday spirit with our neighbors!
If you are looking for additional ways to serve this holiday season, there is a lot more we are doing:
- Help build a home for a deserving family as a part of our Methodist Build with Habitat for Humanity. Our build days are November 16 and December 7.
- Prepare sack meals for our homeless neighbors in Dallas with the Feed Your Neighbor project on November 23.
- We are supporting the Boyd Elementary Holiday Store, where students can “buy” gifts for their family members. Donations are being collected through December 1
- We are collecting toys and other gift items for Toys for Tots Collin County through December 15.
- We are collecting food for the Allen Community Outreach Holiday Food Drive through December 15.

What is the Holiday Challenge?
We are a community that puts faith into action, and serving is an integral part of living as a follower of Jesus Christ.
Our Holiday Challenge invites us to be the hands and heart of God in the world even when our folks around us are focused on self-indulgence.
Below, we’ve provided information on all of our Holiday Challenge projects. We hope you’ll find the right opportunity for you to serve.
