Change 4 Change Update
Change4Change started at FUMC Allen on March 25, 2018. The idea is simple: to designate all the loose change (pennies, nickels, dimes, etc.) received in the offering plate during worship toward the General Mission fund. And those pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters really add up!
In 2018, we received $973.88 to use for missions just from Change4Change! We used these funds to support teachers at Rountree Elementary School, supply 700 water bottles for students at Boyd Elementary School during STARR testing in May, and provide the real dollars when children pay for their purchases at Missions Café with Bible bucks earned in Sunday School.
In 2019, we dreamed even bigger. Using your pocket change–$280.66 of it, to be exact, plus what remained from 2018–we made a gift of $700.00 to pay off all student meal debt for Boyd Elementary, specifically focusing on students who had fallen behind because of family financial difficulties.
According to Allen ISD, the policy of the student nutrition department is “students use a prepaid lunch account to purchase his/her school meals. Students will be allowed a grace period of two days to continue to purchase school meals when the account balance has been exhausted. The District will allow the student’s account to accumulate a negative balance with no fees or interest applied to the account. After the student reaches the maximum charge limit, the student may receive an alternate meal. When the grace period has ended, the student will need to eat breakfast before coming to school and bring a lunch from home until the account has funds.”
Statistics from Allen ISD also indicate that nearly 22 percent of students in our district have a family income that qualifies them for free or reduced meals. Some students accrue a negative balance as their family experiences a change, such as a divorce or a job loss. In many cases, the student does not yet qualify for free/reduced lunch benefits as the paperwork is in process, particularly when one parent may no longer be providing support.
We are grateful to each and every one of you who put a little change in the offering plate this year. Please keep it coming! Together we can do amazing things to offer God’s love and kindness to our neighbors.
What is Change 4 Change?
On Sunday, March 25, 2018, we challenged our congregation to bring their loose change to worship and drop it into the offering plate.
All of your coin offerings–quarters, nickels, dimes, half dollars–donated during the 8:15am, 9:30am and 11:00am Sunday morning worship services will be allocated to support the many church activities related to missions.
At last count, our church collects approximately $26 in coin offerings per calendar quarter, resulting in approximately $104 in coin offerings per calendar year. What a change we could make if our coins intentionally come into worship and into the missions fund!
We also welcome and encourage you to capture a photo of where your loose change lives in your house and share those images on social media, tagging your contribution with the hashtag #change4change.
Let’s use our change to make a change for the world.
