We’re still going to change the world!
This year will certainly look different because of COVID-19, but the leadership team of Change the World Allen has been busy figuring out how we can still inspire, equip, and mobilize volunteers to help their neighbors, whether they’re down the street or in another country.
One way we plan to do this is to approach changing the world as a year-round activity, rather than focusing on just one weekend. We know that our neighbors need help all the time–not just once a year–so this was something we had been exploring already. Our current global crisis has given us the opportunity to put these plans into action while keeping our volunteers and project recipients safe.
As you may know, Change the World Allen offers two kinds of projects: home repair/yard work projects and general projects. We have received many applications seeking help with home repair/yard work, and we have volunteers currently taking a look to see what we can do. Rather than gathering large groups to tackle these projects quickly, we’ll be breaking them down into “micro-projects” that a family or other quarantine groups can work on together for a few hours.
Many of our general projects will still take place but in some different ways. We will host a Kids Against Hunger food packaging, collect food for Allen Community Outreach, collect underwear for Streetside Showers in McKinney, offer a blood drive, and much more. We will also have at-home options for volunteers who may not feel safe or comfortable being out of their homes at this time.
Change the World Weekend kicks off on Thursday, May 14, but the event will continue for much longer that three or four days in May! Please visit www.changetheworldallen.org for full details as they become available or email Rev. Jessica Wright with any of your questions about Change The World Weekend.
