What is the place of children in the church?
At various points in Christian history, we have been baffled by children. However, Jesus teaches his disciples to “turn and become like little children” (Matthew 18:3), which demonstrates to us that we have a lot to learn from children.
In the Kingdom of God, children and “the least of these”–the social outcast and most vulnerable–are models and teachers.
On this Back to School Sunday, we will bless and celebrate our children, pray for all educators and those who support young people, and discover what Jesus is calling us to learn in the Community of God.
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:1-3 NRSV
