You are invited to the Second Annual Collin County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Appreciation Day Service on Monday, January 21, 2019–the official Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday–from 11:30am to 1:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Allen, 601 S Greenville Ave, Allen, Texas 75002.
Dr. John McCaa, WFAA News co-anchor, is Master of Ceremonies for the second year. 2019 event co-chairs are Rev. Todd Harris, First United Methodist Church of Allen; Pastor Timothy Jones, Rockbridge Church, Allen; and Dr. Wayne Stafford, Sr., Fellowship Christian Center Church, Plano.
The mission of the Appreciation Day Service is to honor Dr. King’s legacy and continue the values he represented of love, equality, and justice. The service, a collaboration of civic organizations, churches, community leaders, and academic institutions, is organized and managed by volunteers and funded through donations.
The program includes musical selections performed by choirs from several area churches and the MLK Day Community Choir; a dance presentation by Fellowship Christian Center Plano Ensemble; and proclamations from mayors of the cities of Allen, Frisco, McKinney, and Plano, and Collin County Judge.
We will recognize the winners of the Collin County Student Art Contest, and their art work will be on display at the event. We’ll also honor the recipients of the 2019 Collin County MLK Drum Major Awards: Baine Brooks, Colin Kimball, and Dr. Rev. Charles Reese, Sr. The Drum Major award was established by Dr. King to recognize individuals who have dedicated much of their lives to improving the human condition.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to stay for an informal reception and light lunch following the service. Follow MLK Day Collin County on Facebook to get all the news about this event.
